Line Editing

This is artistic approach — if focuses on style, craft, rhythm, and flow.

A line editor will analyze the manuscript line by line for content, making sure there is no ambiguity or plot holes.  As your line editor, I will ensure the story flows well, that the proper tense is used, and that the POV is consistent throughout the manuscript.

This is the most intensive type of editing because the editor walks a fine line between keeping the author’s voice, ensuring the style is proper, and the story flows and is consistent.

As your line editor, I can also make passive writing active or make suggestions, so authors are showing, not telling.  I will strive to help improve technique, maintain a consistent theme, help the plot move forward and ensure the character is consistent throughout the entire story.  I will point out if a scene is confusing and needs polishing.  I will ensure the tension and plot are not interrupted with the mundane thereby helping the overall atmosphere and tone of the story.

I also point out instances when an author uses the same word multiple times on the same page or in the same paragraph.

I may also point out problems with merging characteristics.  I make sure the author doesn’t confuse one character’s traits with a similar character, and make sure the main subjects and supporting characters are truly unique.
